Shannon Marie is a mixed media painter living in Brisbane, Queensland.

With a focus on portraiture and elaborate scenes, Shannon explores ways to express unique, difficult to communicate, subjects matter. Her ambition is to open communication and reflection on difficult experiences like childhood trauma and chronic pain.

Shannon uses their own image to build a foundation, this is the person experiencing, feeling, expressing. They then weave the intricate details into the piece that represent the event, the people present, the effect, or the space.

Objects that seem ordinary contrast against vibrant colours and tangle with the self.

Shannon challenges the idea that trauma is ugly, creating imagery which on the surface could be seen in a positive perspective, but from another perspective, could be considered quite melancholy or insidious. Emotions from the figure can be illusive, and Shannon does this purposefully to leave space for the viewer to ponder the context.

From the perspective of the artist, their pieces are very specifically about their own experience, however the viewer may find their own meaning, their own experience inside the piece that the artist could not have foreseen.

Shannon’s work is raw, experience driven, and reaches out to anyone who has truly suffered and struggled in the world, but who still see the beauty in that world.

Exploring Life and the Self

Primarily orange and yellow artwork of a woman's face with long flowing hair, and freckles, accented with gold and vibrant colors.
My art is a celebration of life and an analysis of my own experiences.
I am inspired by nature, space, storytelling and world building. I love creating characters, embodiments of emotion or metaphors, and exploring that in portraiture or scenes.
My work tends to drift towards the surreal and the abstract, sometimes I enjoy making simple comical illustrations of eyes or teeth and other strange objects of interest.
